Engineer Spotlight: Balancing Aesthetics with Functionality in 3D Design
Our Project Engineering Group (PEG) engineers bring their expertise not only to the professional realm but also into their personal projects. Meet Alain, a skilled engineer with a focus in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), showcasing a unique blend of technical precision, creativity and 3D design.
Challenges in 3D Design
During the holiday season, Alain sought out a festive project: printing a nutcracker from a free online print site. However, his excitement turned into a challenge when the printed parts didn’t fit together, and filament was wasted due to a lack of built-in tolerances. Alain saw an opportunity to turn frustration into innovation.
Flawed Print to Functional Design
Taking inspiration from the flawed print, Alain decided to design a nutcracker from scratch. This wasn’t just about aesthetics; Alain understood the importance of balancing model idealization with real-world functionality. He recognized that beautiful designs can be impractical and tedious in real-world applications.

Commitment to Practical Engineering
Alain’s newly crafted nutcracker model addressed the shortcomings of the original. Built-in tolerances and thoughtful design modifications made assembly easier and with minimal supports. This project showcases Alain’s commitment to bridging the gap between idealized models and practical, functional designs.
As we look into the personal engineering pursuits of our Project Engineering Group, Alain’s story reminds us that the essence of engineering goes beyond the theoretical—it’s about bringing ideas to life, overcoming obstacles, and sharing the fruits of our creativity with the world.
